Issue 143
Welcome to Research Outreach! In this issue, we are pleased to spotlight some of the individuals making important contributions to recent discoveries and innovations in research.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented the world’s governments and health organisations with a vaccination challenge on a scale it had never experienced before. Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines were critical in the production and distribution of affordable vaccines across the globe. Katalin Karikó’s 40 years of research into mRNA was the cornerstone of what made this possible. Karikó tells Research Outreach why she loves biochemistry, what it’s like to win a Nobel Prize, and how she would advise young scientists today.
Looking ahead to prepare for future health emergencies is the World Health Organization. Dr Landry Ndriko Mayigane and Dr Stella Chungong from the WHO’s Health Security Preparedness Department recently devised the ‘Nuggets’ of Knowledge platform, an open-source platform that collates vital knowledge collected by first responders during past and present health crises to inform the planning of interventions and actions during future emergencies.
There are plenty of other exciting research projects covered in this issue, from climate science to ADHD research and a roadmap for building a more just socioeconomic landscape around the globe. We hope you’ll enjoy learning about the latest research and feel inspired by it!
